Political Circus Called \u2018Mahagathbandhan\u2019"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><strong>Arun Jaitley<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over the last several months, India was\u00a0exhausted\u00a0with the talk of\u00a0a\u00a0\u2018Mahagathbandhan\u2019. \u00a0The rationale\u00a0was that Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi and the BJP were very strong and could not be challenged by individual party. \u00a0The socio-economic profile of India has changed. \u00a0Indians judge politicians by their merit and capacity and no longer by any traditional loyalty. \u00a0We were promised a\u00a0\u2018coalition of rivals\u2019\u00a0because India had to be saved. \u00a0We were promised a common minimum agenda. \u00a0Each leader amongst the aspirant Prime Ministers wanted to become a \u2018sutradhar\u2019 of the\u00a0alliance. \u00a0He\/\u00a0she would periodically organise shows in his\/ her State and invite the entire bandwagon.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Presently when nominations for the first two phases are over and those for the third phase are about to happen, let us review the situation.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-4197 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.arunjaitley.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/03\/V-AJ-29032019-1-186x241.jpg\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 725px) 100vw, 725px\" alt=\"\" width=\"725\" height=\"940\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The above states account for almost half of the total parliamentary constituencies. \u00a0In the other half, stretching from Maharashtra to Punjab, which includes Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Rajasthan and Gujarat, the political winds are not exactly friendly to the Congress.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>The leadership tussle<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u200b\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Already multiple candidates have made their desire clear to take over the mantle of the leadership. \u00a0Each one of them is interested to see the strength of the other party\u2019s contender depleting. \u00a0Each one of them has high hopes in a chaotic and highly hung Parliament. \u00a0He\/ she believes that only in a chaotic situation he\/ she has a chance.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 The past track record of such governments in terms of policy,\u00a0longevity\u00a0and growth\u00a0has to be borne\u00a0in mind. \u00a0Their\u00a0track record of corruption is equally well-known.<\/p>\n<p><strong><u>Federalism and coalitions<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u200b\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Federalism requires that regional aspirations and representations find place in governance. \u00a0But a larger national interest requires that India must have a national party with an electoral and\u00a0legislative base which can become nucleus\u00a0of such a coalition. \u00a0The coalition under Late Shri Atal Bihari Vajpayee was held by both the personality of the leader and the 183 MPs of the BJP. \u00a0Similarly, the BJP had an absolute majority in the last Lok Sabha\u00a0but it\u00a0still\u00a0formed\u00a0a coalition. \u00a0\u00a0It is only because of the size of the\u00a0BJP\u00a0and clarity on leadership\u00a0in the last coalition\u00a0that a successful government was run under Prime Minister Modi.<\/p>\n<p>\u200b\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0 Today you have no \u2018gathbandhan\u2019 let alone \u2018mahagathbandhan\u2019. \u00a0It is a \u2018non-bandhan\u2019.\u00a0\u00a0You have no leader, no programme, no meeting of minds.\u00a0\u00a0Stability, which is paramount, is a major casualty. \u00a0\u00a0The only thing in common is
