Marking 50 years of the Emergency, the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM) launched a nationwide campaign to educate the youth about the darkest chapter in India’s democratic history. During 25th to 28th June, the BJYM, led by its National President Shri Tejasvi Surya, held 100 Mock Parliaments in major cities across the country.
These events recreated the circumstances of the Emergency era, exposing the brutal suppression of human rights, blatant misuse of constitutional provisions, mass arrests of political opponents, and the curbing of press freedom under the then Congress government led by Smt. Indira Gandhi.
Shri Tejasvi Surya inaugurated the Mock Parliament held in Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh. During his address, he said, “The youth of today must know about the dark legacy of the Congress party during the Emergency. They must understand the cost our democracy paid due to the authoritarian mindset that prevailed.
Through these Mock Parliaments, the BJYM brings about more awareness about the Emergency & highlights to the present generation about the injustices and human rights violations committed during that era.”
The mock sessions saw enthusiastic participation from students, youth leaders, and civil society members, who portrayed the events of 1975-77 with remarkable research and dramatic flair.
Several senior BJP leaders also participated in the events held in their respective regions to motivate and guide the youth. Notable among them were Dr. S. Jaishankar (New Delhi), Dr. Jitendra Singh (Jammu & Kashmir), Shri Baijayant ‘Jay’ Panda (Odisha), Assam Chief Minister Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma (Guwahati), Tripura CM Shri Manik Saha (Agartala) & former Jharkhand CM Shri Babulal Marandi (Ranchi), Shri Kailash Vijayvargiya (Madhya Pradesh) & Shri Suvendu Adhikari (West Bengal).
This milestone initiative of BJYM not only paid tribute to the thousands who suffered during Emergency but also served as a wake-up call for every young Indian to value and safeguard democracy.
