The results of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) elections in Mumbai on 16 January 2026 were historic for the BJP-led Mahayuti alliance in Maharashtra, as it broke the UBT led alliance dominance that had prevailed for almost three decades. The BJP-led Mahayuti alliance swept the polls, winning 118 seats, and the BJP emerged as the single-largest party with 89 seats. The Shiv Sena (Shinde), on the other hand, won 29 seats. UBT secured 65 seats, while the Congress won 24. Smaller parties like the AIMIM won eight seats, while the MNS won six, the NCP three, the Samajwadi Party three, and the NCP–SP one. Together, the Mahayuti alliance won 118 seats, four more than the majority mark in the 227-member Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, clearing the way for it to form the civic body’s leadership.
The polls to the 29 municipal corporations were conducted on January 15 after a gap of several years, and the results were released on 16th January 2026. Municipal corporation elections were held in Mumbai, Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar, Navi Mumbai, Vasai–Virar, Kalyan–Dombivli, Kolhapur, Nagpur, Solapur, Amravati, Akola, Nashik, Pimpri–Chinchwad, Pune, Ulhasnagar, Thane, Chandrapur, Parbhani, Mira–Bhayandar, Nanded–Waghala, Panvel, Bhiwandi–Nizampur, Latur, Malegaon, Sangli–Miraj–Kupwad, Jalgaon, Ahilyanagar, Dhule, Jalna and Ichalkaranji. Results were declared for 2,833 of the 2,868 seats across 29 municipal corporations. Statewide, the BJP won 1,400 seats, while its ally Shiv Sena secured 397. Shiv Sena (UBT) won 153 seats and the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS) 13. The Congress emerged with 324 seats.
