BJP Senior leader Kabindra Purkayastha is no more
Former Union Minister Shri Kabindra Purkayastha passed away on 7th January . He was 94. His demise marks the end of an era in Assam’s political life, particularly in the Barak Valley region.Regarded as the patriarch of the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in Assam, he played a pivotal and historic role in laying the organisational foundation of the party in the state, especially during its formative and challenging years.
Born in Assam, Shri Kabindra Purkayastha was deeply rooted in the socio-cultural fabric of the state. He entered public life at a young age and steadily rose through the ranks due to his hard work, organisational skills, and ability to connect with people across sections. He was elected to the Lok Sabha from the Silchar constituency, representing the aspirations and concerns of the region with sincerity and courage.
During his parliamentary career, Shri Purkayastha served as Union Minister of State, where he contributed meaningfully to policy formulation and implementation in areas under his charge. He was known for his disciplined approach, constructive interventions in Parliament, and unwavering commitment to democratic values. Colleagues across party lines admired him for his courteous conduct and issue-based politics.
Beyond formal positions, Shri Purkayastha was remembered as a grassroots leader who remained accessible to citizens.
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi expressed deep sorrow at the passing of the leader.
In his message, the Prime Minister said he is pained by the loss of Shri Purkayastha Ji, whose unwavering commitment to serving society and significant contribution towards the progress of Assam will always be remembered. He noted that Shri Purkayastha Ji played a vital role in strengthening the Bharatiya Janata Party across the state.
In separate posts on X, Shri Modi stated: “Pained by the passing of former MP and Union Minister Shri Kabindra Purkayastha Ji. His commitment to serving society and contribution towards Assam’s progress will always be remembered. He played a vital role in strengthening the BJP across the state. My thoughts are with his family and admirers in this sad hour. Om Shanti.”
Shri Kabindra Purkayastha’s life was marked by humility, honesty, and devotion to public duty. Even after active politics, he continued to guide younger leaders and remained engaged with social causes. His passing is a profound loss to the political fraternity and to the people he served for decades.
The BJP National President Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda said via post on X said, “Deeply saddened by the demise of senior BJP leader and former Union Minister Shri Kabindra Purkayastha ji. He dedicated his entire life to building the party from the grassroots and worked for the development of Assam. Kabindra Purkayastha ji was a powerful voice for Assam, he raised the state’s issues with clarity and conviction. From organisational work to parliamentary responsibilities, he always served society with dedication. My heartfelt condolences to his family, friends and admirers. Om Shanti!”
BJP National Working President Shri Nitin Nabin also expressed sorrow over demise of the leader. He said “Deeply saddened by the passing of Shri Kabindra Purkayastha Ji, a veteran BJP leader from Assam. A former Union Minister in the Cabinet of Atal Bihari Vajpayee Ji, he dedicated his entire life to public service and the nation.
Guided by deep ideological conviction and unwavering organisational dedication, he helped lay the groundwork of the Bharatiya Janata Party in Assam and remained central to its growth in the region.
