Shri Radheshyam Thakur joined the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1970. During this time, he got in touch with Nanji Deshmukh ji.

During the Emergency, he was jailed under the Maintenance of Internal Security Act (MISA) and spent his time in Darbhanga, Hazaribagh and Muzaffarpur jails.

In 1980, Shri Radheshyam Thakur was associated with BJP and continuously worked to strengthen the party organisation at the grass roots level in Bihar.
