CP Radhakrishnan takes oath as 15th Vice President of India

Grand victory for NDA Vice Presidential candidate

Shri Chandrapuram Ponnusamy Radhakrishnan was sworn in as the 15th Vice-President of India on 12 September 2025. Hon’ble President Smt. Droupadi Murmu administered the oath of office at Rashtrapati Bhavan in the presence of several dignitaries.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi, former Vice-Presidents, Union Ministers, Chief Ministers of various states, Opposition leaders and many other dignitaries attended the ceremony.

Earlier, after taking the oath, Shri Radhakrishnan paid floral tributes at Rajghat to Mahatma Gandhi, at Sadaiv Atal to former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee, and at Kisan Ghat to former Prime Minister Charan Singh.

At Parliament House, he was welcomed by Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairperson Shri Harivansh, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Shri Kiren Rijiju, Ministers of State Shri Arjun Ram Meghwal and Shri L. Murugan, and Rajya Sabha Secretary-General. He also planted a sapling in the Parliament complex in the presence of Ministers and Rajya Sabha officials.

Later in the day, Shri Radhakrishnan held a meeting with floor leaders of parties in the Parliament.

Notable, on 09 September 2025, NDA candidate and Maharashtra Governor Shri CP Radhakrishnan defeated the I.N.D.I. alliance candidate and former Supreme Court Judge Shri B Sudarshan Reddy by a margin of 152 votes. Briefing reporters after the counting of votes for the vice-presidential election, Rajya Sabha Secretary General and returning officer Shri PC Mody said out of the total 781 electors, 767 MPs voted in the election. He informed that out of 767 votes, 752 were found valid and 15 were declared invalid. “I declare CP Radhakrishnan elected to the post of Vice President of India, and the results will be communicated to the Election Commission,” Shri Modi said.

The BJP-led NDA had 427 MPs on paper, plus the support of the YSRCP’s 11 MPs. Some MPs representing smaller parties also backed him. This made Shri Radhakrishnan’s victory a foregone conclusion, way above the halfway mark of 377.But the final tally surpassed the expectations of all, including the BJP. Shri

Immediately after the declaration of election victory, Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi met Shri CP Radhakrishnan Ji and congratulated him on winning the Vice-Presidential election.
The Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi congratulated Thiru CP Radhakrishnan on winning the 2025 Vice Presidential election. In a post on X, he wrote: “Congratulations to Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji on winning the 2025 Vice Presidential election. His life has always been devoted to serving society and empowering the poor and marginalised. I am confident that he will be an outstanding VP, who will strengthen our Constitutional values and enhance Parliamentary discourse.”

Radhakrishnan received 60 per cent of the total valid votes polled, while Justice Reddy (retd) secured 40 per cent of the vote.

Defence Minister Shri Rajnath Singh called on Vice President-elect Thiru CP Radhakrishnan Ji and congratulated him on his stupendous victory.

Union Home and Cooperation Minister Shri Amit Shah called on Shri C.P. Radhakrishnan Ji after his grand victory. He congratulated him on his victory, and extended heartfelt best wishes for his upcoming tenure which will certainly set new milestones in parliamentary democracy elevating the standards of political discourse to a new height.
In a Social media post he said, “I firmly believe that your sagacity as a leader who has risen from the grassroots of the society and profound knowledge about administration will help us in bringing out the best in our parliamentary democracy to serve the marginalised. I extend my warmest wishes to you for your journey as the custodian of the sanctity of the Upper House.”

The extent of victory margin for the NDA candidate came as a setback to the Opposition I.N.D.I. alliance, which had claimed all its 315 MPs remained united in the election and voted for Reddy.

The voting for the Vice-Presidential election was held on 9 September between 10 AM and 5 PM. Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi was the first among the members to cast his vote. Besides, Lok Sabha Speaker Shri Om Birla, Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Shri Harivansh, several Union Ministers, including Shri Rajnath Singh, Shri Amit Shah, Shri J.P. Nadda, Shri Nitin Gadkari, Shri Ashwini Vaishnaw, and Shri Shivraj Singh Chouhan, and others MPs also voted.

Union Minister of Parliamentary Affairs Shri Kiren Rijiju told reporters, “The election of the Vice President is conducted in a free and fair manner, voting takes place with secrecy, and many opposition MPs have also voted for CP Radhakrishnan, which shows that the MPs have voted by listening to the voice of their conscience.”

Born in Tiruppur, Tamil Nadu Shri CP Radhakrishnan has also served as Governor of Jharkhand, Telangana, Puducherry and Maharashtra.
