As India observes ‘Balidan Diwas’ on 23rd June and celebrates his 125th birth anniversary, the nation remembers one of its most glorious sons Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee not merely as the founder of a political movement, but as a visionary nation-builder whose ideals continue to inspire the journey towards ‘Viksit Bharat’.
A distinguished scholar, educationist, parliamentarian, and patriot, Dr. Mookerjee devoted his entire life to the service of Maa Bharati, leaving behind an enduring legacy of national unity, cultural pride, and principled public life. Born on 6 July 1901 in Calcutta, Dr. Mookerjee displayed extraordinary academic brilliance from an

early age becoming the youngest Vice-Chancellor of the University of Calcutta at the age of 33, where he championed educational excellence while promoting India’s intellectual and cultural heritage. As Independent India’s first Minister for Industry and Supply, he laid important foundations for industrial development and economic self-reliance during the initial years of the independence.
When Dr. Mookerjee resigned from the Union Cabinet in 1950 in protest against the Nehru-Liaquat Pact, he firmly believed that national duty must always prevail over political office. His conviction that the unity, dignity, and security of the nation were non-negotiable established him as one of India’s tallest nationalist leaders. His famous belief that public life must be guided by principles rather than positions continues to inspire generations of political workers. While recognising the need for a political movement rooted in cultural nationalism, national integration, and good governance, Dr. Mookerjee founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh in 1951, sowing the ideological seeds that would ultimately evolve into today’s Bharatiya Janata Party.
Dr. Mookerjee’s uncompromising opposition to the special constitutional status granted to Jammu and Kashmir became one of the defining chapters of his life. His historic declaration—‘Ek desh mein do Vidhan, do Nishan aur do Pradhan nahin chalenge’—captured his unwavering belief in one Constitution, one Flag, and one sovereign India. His supreme sacrifice in 1953 transformed him into a symbol of nationalist resolve. His life remains a shining example of courage, sacrifice, integrity, and unwavering devotion to Maa Bharati. His vision of a united, strong, self-reliant, and culturally confident India continues to illuminate the path of ‘Viksit Bharat’ under the dynamic and charismatic leadership of Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi who has not only took the bold decision of abrogating Article 370 paving the path of complete integration of Jammu & Kashmir to India, but also enacted CAA, New Education Policy, restarted the projects like fertilizer factory at Sindri and gave the mantra of ‘Vikas bhi, Virasat bhi’.
As the nation observed ‘ Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ on 25 June, it was a solemn reminder of one of the darkest chapters in India’s democratic history—the imposition of the Emergency in 1975. On this day, the then Congress government led by Indira Gandhi, suspended fundamental rights, silenced the free press, imprisoned thousands of opposition leaders, social activists, students, and journalists without trial, and undermined the very spirit of the Constitution. Democratic institutions were assaulted, dissent was criminalized, and the voice of the people was suppressed through iron hand. For the Bharatiya Jana Sangh and countless democracy defenders, the Emergency was not merely a political struggle but a battle to protect the Constitution and the democratic soul of Bharat. Thousands of dedicated workers endured imprisonment and persecution while refusing to surrender their commitment to liberty and constitutional values. ‘Samvidhan Hatya Diwas’ is a tribute to their sacrifice and a reaffirmation of the BJP’s unwavering commitment to democracy, constitutional governance, individual freedoms, and the principle that no government is above the Constitution or the will of the people.
