Summit reinforces India’s growing engagement with the Nordic region
Prime Minister Modi’s participation in the 3rd India–Nordic Summit in Oslo on May 19, 2026 represented another significant step in India’s engagement with the Nordic region. Leaders from Norway, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, and Iceland participated in the summit, which focused on technology, sustainability, innovation, digital transformation, and global governance.
Hosted by Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, the summit built upon earlier India–Nordic Summits held in Stockholm in 2018 and Copenhagen in 2022. Leaders acknowledged the changing geopolitical and technological environment and emphasized the need for closer cooperation between India and Nordic nations.
One of the most important outcomes of the summit was the decision to elevate India–Nordic relations into a “Trusted Green Technology and Innovation Strategic Partnership.” Discussions centered on climate action, renewable energy, green transition, circular economy, and sustainable development.
Technology and innovation emerged as major pillars of cooperation. The summit covered collaboration in artificial intelligence, cybersecurity, quantum computing, digitalisation, 5G and 6G technologies, and advanced manufacturing. Both sides also emphasized partnerships in STEM education, innovation ecosystems, and scientific research.
Trade and economic cooperation received significant attention. Leaders welcomed progress in the India–EU Free Trade Agreement negotiations and implementation of the Trade and Economic Partnership Agreement (TEPA) with EFTA countries.
Discussions also highlighted resilient supply chains, investment partnerships, and easier mobility for researchers, students, and skilled professionals.
The summit further addressed maritime cooperation, Arctic research, blue economy initiatives, multilateral reforms, and defence collaboration. Prime Minister Modi emphasized that democracy, rule of law, and commitment to multilateralism make India and the Nordic countries “natural partners.”
The summit reinforced India’s growing engagement with the Nordic region and created new opportunities for strategic cooperation in technology, sustainability, and innovation.
