PM’s Visit to Italy
Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi’s visit to Italy on May 19–20, 2026 marked a major milestone in India–Italy relations, with both countries elevating ties to a “Special Strategic Partnership.” The visit reflected the growing convergence between the two countries in defence, technology, trade, connectivity, and global affairs.
Prime Minister Modi met Italian President Sergio Mattarella and Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni in Rome. Both sides reviewed progress under the India–Italy Joint Strategic Action Plan 2025–2029 and agreed to deepen collaboration in science and technology, defence, artificial intelligence, innovation, energy, culture, education, and people-to-people exchanges.
Trade and investment emerged as a major focus. India and Italy set a target of increasing bilateral trade to €20 billion by 2029. Leaders emphasized the importance of the India–EU Free Trade Agreement and encouraged industries to strengthen supply chains and industrial partnerships.
Defence cooperation became one of the most important outcomes of the visit. India and Italy adopted a Defence Industrial Roadmap aimed at promoting co-design, co-development, and co-production of defence equipment. Discussions covered aerospace systems, naval platforms, and advanced defence technologies.
Cooperation in emerging technologies and connectivity also received major attention. Agreements were signed in critical minerals, scientific research, maritime transport, education, and innovation. India and Italy agreed to cooperate on the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), recognizing its importance for trade and connectivity.
Cultural ties were also strengthened during the visit. Both countries announced that 2027 would be celebrated as the “Year of Culture and Tourism between India and Italy.” Agreements promoting academic exchanges, research cooperation, and mobility of skilled professionals were also signed.
A notable highlight was Prime Minister Modi’s visit to the headquarters of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the first by an Indian Prime Minister in three decades. During the visit, he received the Agricola Award in recognition of his leadership in food security, sustainable agriculture, and rural development.
The Italy visit was described as highly successful and strategically important, opening new opportunities for collaboration in defence, connectivity, trade, innovation, and culture.
