BJP’s Historic Triumph in Bengal, Assam and Puducherry

Results reaffirm people’s faith in India’s democratic institutions, constitutional values, politics of performance and stability: PM Modi

The political landscape of eastern and northeastern India underwent a momentous transformation as the Bharatiya Janata Party-led NDA scripted a historic and resounding electoral triumph in the recently concluded Assembly elections across four states and one Union Territory. With spectacular victories in West Bengal and Assam, coupled with an impressive surge in Puducherry and Keralam, the BJP emerged as the defining political force, reshaping the contours of regional politics with boundless blessings of people.

The BJP’s phenomenal success on 4 May 2026 in the Assembly elections of West Bengal and Assam was powered by a decisive swing in voter sentiment, reflected in an extraordinary rise in vote share of nearly eight per cent in Bengal and five per cent in Assam. This decisive shift enabled the BJP to secure an absolute majority in both states, paving the way for the party to form governments on its own strength in the eastern region. While West Bengal, for the first time in history, is set to witness the rise of a BJP government, Assam reaffirmed its confidence in the NDA by delivering a historic hat-trick victory.

The election results not only strengthened the BJP’s national footprint but also reflected a profound shift in the political mood across regions once considered electorally difficult terrain for the party. From the vibrant streets of Kolkata to the sprawling tea gardens of Assam, and from the coastal battlegrounds of Puducherry, Keralam and Tamil Nadu, the BJP’s campaign—spearheaded by Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi—combined charismatic leadership with relentless grassroots mobilisation, disciplined organization, and a narrative rooted in development, nationalism, good governance, and welfare-oriented politics is key to the sweeping victories of the BJP.

The towering popularity, decisive leadership, and unparalleled mass appeal of Shri Narendra Modi transformed the elections into a people-centric movement revolving around his vision for a stronger and more aspirational India. In West Bengal particularly, BJP workers campaigned under intense political pressure and fierce competition, yet displayed extraordinary resilience, dedication, and unwavering morale. In Assam, the NDA’s emphasis on stability, development, and disciplined governance reinforced public trust and continuity. In Puducherry, meticulous alliance coordination and focused campaigning amplified NDA’s political influence. Meanwhile, in Keralam, the BJP significantly expanded its organisational strength and electoral reach, emerging as an increasingly formidable force in the state’s political landscape.

“I see a tsunami this time,” declared Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah at a press conference in Kolkata ten days before the counting of votes began. Confidently proclaiming that “Anga, Banga and Kalinga” would soon witness BJP governments, his prediction now appears prophetic. With Bengal’s historic mandate, the BJP has symbolically established its ascendancy over the three ancient civilizational regions, heralding the dawn of a new political era in eastern India.

“My humble salute to the people of Bengal—a billion times over. This resounding mandate is a stern rebuke from the people of Bengal to those who champion fear, appeasement, and infiltrators. It marks the triumph of ‘trust’ in Shri @narendramodi Ji over the ‘fear’ propagated by the TMC. For every BJP Karyakarta—including myself—this is a moment of immense pride; for today, from the very source of Maa Ganga at Gangotri all the way to Gangasagar, the saffron flag of the BJP is flying high with glory everywhere. This historic victory achieved by the BJP in Bengal is the result of the sacrifice, struggle, and martyrdom of our countless party karyakartas. It is a triumph of the resilience of those families who, despite enduring violence, never abandoned the saffron flag. I pay my humble tributes to all those karyakartas —and their families—who, during the BJP’s arduous journey from zero seats to a resounding majority today, laid down their lives, faced violence, endured torture, and yet never wavered from the path of our ideology. Through this resounding mandate, the people of Bengal have paid a fitting tribute to all those martyred BJP karyakartas. For this historic victory, I extend my congratulations to the BJP National President, Shri @NitinNabin; the West Bengal BJP State President, Shri @SamikBJP; the Leader of the Opposition in the Legislative Assembly, Shri @SuvenduWB; and every single party karyakartas who stood firm in every nook and corner of Bengal.”

administrative implications. The election results reflected a dramatic shift in the state’s political equations. The BJP’s vote share surged to 45.85 per cent from 37.97 per cent in 2021, while the Trinamool Congress (TMC) saw its support decline from 48.02 per cent to nearly 40.8 per cent.

The change in vote share translated into a stunning reversal in seat tally. The BJP, which had won 77 seats in 2021, scripted history by capturing 207 seats in the 294-member Assembly, comfortably crossing the majority mark. In contrast, the ruling TMC suffered a crushing setback, with its tally collapsing from 215 seats to just 80. The Indian National Congress secured two seats, while the Communist Party of India (Marxist), managed to win only one seat.

“The Rise of Faith—BJP’s Historic Mega Victory in Bengal” Today’s day is an emotional moment for every worker of the Bharatiya Janata Party. This unprecedented victory of the BJP in West Bengal is the people’s seal of approval on the visionary leadership and people-welfare-oriented policies of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi ji, and the defeat of the misrule, corruption, extortion, infiltration, appeasement, anarchy, and thuggery of the Trinamool Congress. History bears witness—when Bengal decides on change, no power can stop it. The sacred land of Bengal, home to great patriots like Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore, Bankimchandra Chattopadhyay, Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose, and Dr. Shyama Prasad Mukherjee, has for the first time expressed its faith in the BJP by shattering the arrogance of the Trinamool Congress. For this massive victory, I extend my heartfelt congratulations to BJP’s All India President @NitinNabin ji, State President @SamikBJP ji, Leader of the Opposition in the Assembly @SuvenduWB ji, and every dedicated worker at the booth level; at the same time, I convey my deepest gratitude from the bottom of my heart to all the voters of the state. Under Narendra Modiji’s leadership, the double-engine government is committed to building an “Advanced West Bengal” with the goal of “Amar Sonar Bangla.”

“The BJP’s historic victory in West Bengal proves that the country has chosen trust, not illusion. This result is the reward of years of dedication, the strength of the organization, and the public’s unwavering faith. In Bengal, this is the triumph of that ideology whose seeds were sown by the late Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee ji in the spirit of ‘Nation First.’ The journey from Jan Sangh to BJP is today visible in its most powerful form. Reaching a full majority today is not a coincidence, but the outcome of dedication. The hard work of every worker and every vote of the people together have created history. Under the respected Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi ji’s leadership, ‘Sabka Saath, Sabka Vikas, Sabka Vishwas, Sabka Prayas’ is not just a slogan, but has become the foundation of governance. New India, especially young India, now wants results, not promises, and the BJP has delivered results.”

RESULTS-2026

In terms of total votes polled, the BJP secured 29,218,815 votes, while the TMC received 26,002,017 votes. The Congress garnered 1,884,900 votes. The figures highlighted not merely a routine electoral victory, but a decisive transformation in Bengal’s political landscape.

One of the most striking highlights of the West Bengal election was the BJP’s massive victory in the NAXALBARI seat (Now Matigara–Naxalbari), once the epicentre of Naxalite activities and the birthplace of the Left-wing extremisms in India. The BJP won the constituency with the state’s highest victory margin of nearly 1.4 lakh votes. The result carried deep political significance, highlighting Bengal’s dramatic shift from decades of Left-wing dominance and 34 years of Communist rule to a historic BJP mandate of 207 Assembly seats.

The analysis of polling patterns revealed striking trends. The BJP dominated constituencies where voter turnout ranged between 85 and 95 per cent, winning 172 seats in that category, while the TMC managed only 45. In constituencies witnessing turnout above 95 per cent, the BJP securing 28 seats. West Bengal recorded an unprecedented average voter turnout of 93 per cent — the highest ever since Independence — underlining the extraordinary public participation and emotional intensity surrounding the election.

The BJP also registered dramatic gains in several constituencies, recording vote-share jumps exceeding 20 percentage points in seats such as Jangipur and Jadavpur. Meanwhile, the TMC suffered some of its steepest declines in constituencies like Rejinagar, Nowda, and Jangipur, where its vote share dropped by more than 30 percentage points. Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi along with BJP National President Shri Nitin Nabin, Union Home Minister Shri Amit Shah and other senior leaders played a central role in energizing the BJP campaign across the state. Massive rallies, roadshows appeals to save Bengal’s cultural identity, promises of rapid development, and relentless and dedicated work of thousands of Karyakartas transformed the BJP from a peripheral force into a formidable political powerhouse. The slogan of political change resonated strongly among youth, women, urban voters, middle-class families, and first-time supporters.

The BJP’s victory in West Bengal was historic not merely because of the scale of its seat gains, but because it permanently altered the state’s political equations. The blooming of the lotus in Bengal symbolized the arrival of a new political era — one in which regional aspirations increasingly intersect with national political currents, reshaping the future trajectory of the state’s politics.

The BJP’s victory in West Bengal was historic not merely for the scale of its electoral success, but because it permanently altered the state’s political equations. Assam Reaffirms Trust
BJP-NDA Scripts Historic
Hat-Trick Victory

If West Bengal symbolized expansion, Assam represented consolidation, stability, and political maturity for the BJP. The party’s third consecutive victory in the state reaffirmed its deepening roots in the Northeast and reflected strong public endorsement of good governance, development, and political stability. The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA), along with its allies Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) and Bodoland People’s Front (BPF), scripted history by securing a massive three-fourth majority in the 126-member Assam Assembly.

The election results highlighted the BJP’s growing dominance in the state. The party improved its vote share from 33.21 per cent in 2021 to 37.81 per cent in 2026, registering a swing of nearly 4.6 percentage points in its favour. This increase translated into a remarkable jump in seat tally, with the BJP winning 82 seats

compared to 60 in the previous Assembly election. Altogether, the NDA secured a historic 102 seats — comfortably crossing the majority mark of 64 and recording its best-ever performance in Assam.

The Congress, with a vote share of 29.84 per cent, suffered a strong debacle and severely declined its seat count from 29 to 19, exposing the limitations of fragmented opposition politics. Among BJP allies, the AGP secured 10 seats with a vote share of 6.47 per cent. The BPF also emerged stronger, winning 10 seats with 3.73 per cent vote share, significantly improving upon its previous performance.

In contrast, the Opposition camp witnessed a steady erosion of influence. The All-India United Democratic Front (AIUDF), which had won 16 seats in 2021, was
