Indian Railways Registers Robust 4% Growth

Indian Railways recorded robust operational growth in June 2026, reinforcing its position as a key driver of India’s economic activity. The national transporter handled 142.21 million tonnes of freight during the month, marking a 4% increase compared to 136.71 million tonnes in June 2025. Freight earnings also rose by around 430 crore, reflecting a 3% year-on-year growth.

Key commodities contributed significantly to this expansion. Fertiliser loading grew by 19.1%, followed by other goods at 17.3%, iron ore at 9.4%, and coal supplied to power plants at 7%. Passenger traffic also showed steady growth, with Indian Railways carrying 63.81 crore passengers in June 2026, up from 62.37 crore in the same month last year. Non-suburban travel increased by 3.9%, while suburban services rose by 0.9%.
