The Atmanirbhar Bharat Abhiyaan, launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on May 12, 2020, represents the modern incarnation of swadeshi principles aims to transform India into a global manufacturing hub while maintaining strategic autonomy. A large number of initiatives launched under the Abhiyan are now showing results and even changing the notion of swadeshi and Aatmanirbharta, which were etched in the minds of the people as something obsolete. The power of swadeshi was seen during Covid-19 pandemic when India not only manufactured vaccines and PPE kits but also supplied them to other nations who needed them in the time of global crisis. While earlier swadeshi was associated with commodities like khadi and diya, today India is exporting indigenous aircraft like the Tejas LCA and the Brahmos missile while manufacturing tanks, artillery, and drones. The mantra of swadeshi and ‘Aatmnirbharata’ has given new confidence to the nation, opening new vistas of opportunities and meeting challenges successfully.
