Senior BJP leader Balbir Punj is no more

     Shri Balbir Punj (1949–2026) was a veteran journalist turned senior Bharatiya Janata Party leader and two-term Rajya Sabha MP. A key ideological voice, he served as BJP Vice President (2013) and convener of the party’s Intellectual Cell, representing the Upper House from Uttar Pradesh (2000–2006) and Odisha (2008–2014), passed away on 18 April, 2026. He was 77 years old. Shri Punj had been widely regarded as an important member of the BJP’s intellectual and policy-oriented circles. He contributed greatly to the debates on social, economic, and political issues in the Upper House.

Shri Punj built a distinguished career in journalism before joining politics. He began his professional journey in 1971 with the publication of a daily newspaper named The Motherland. He joined Financial Express in 1974. He worked for over two decades until 1996 at Financial Express. He was well known for his incisive analysis and commentary. He later served as Executive Editor of The Observer of Business and Politics from May 1996 to March 2000.

Prime Minister Shri Narendra Modi expressed heartfelt condolences on the demise of Shri Punj. The PM said, “Shri Balbir Punj Ji was a prolific writer, thinker and public intellectual. He made a rich contribution to the world of media. His writings were widely read, reflecting his strong passion towards national regeneration. His Parliamentary interventions were rich in facts and theory. Shri Balbir Punj Ji worked tirelessly to strengthen the BJP, especially among students, professionals, scholars and intellectuals. He was in-charge of various states, including Gujarat. Fondly remember our interactions from those times. Pained by his passing. Condolences to his family and friends. Om Shanti.”

BJP National President Shri Nitin Nabin said, “The news of the demise of senior BJP leader and former Rajya Sabha MP Balbir Punj ji is extremely heart breaking. His clear ideological vision in public life, unwavering commitment to the nation’s interests, and his contribution to guiding society through his writings will always be remembered. May God grant peace to the departed soul and give strength to the bereaved family and supporters to bear this sorrow.”

As an author and columnist, he remained active until his final days, writing extensively in Hindi and English newspapers and magazines. His death marks the loss of a veteran journalist, thinker, and political figure.
