Himanta Biswa Sarma Elected Leader of BJP Legislature Party

     A day before the swearing-in ceremony, Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma was unanimously elected leader of the BJP Legislature Party at a meeting held in Guwahati on 10 May 2026 in the presence of BJP central observer and Union Minister Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda, senior BJP leaders and other co-observers. Following his election as Legislature Party leader Senior party leaders congratulated Shri Sarma and expressed confidence in his leadership for steering Assam towards greater development and prosperity.

Union Minister Shri Jagat Prakash Nadda in a social media post said, “I extend my heartfelt congratulations and best wishes to Shri @himantabiswaJi on being elected as the leader of the BJP and NDA Legislature Party. The people of Assam have given their blessings for the third consecutive time to development, stability, and public welfare. Under the leadership of the Hon’ble Prime Minister Shri @narendramodiJi, the double-engine government will play an important role in building a “Developed India” while realizing the resolve of “Developed Assam.”

Shri Himanta Biswa Sarma also thanked the people of Assam for their overwhelming support and assured that the BJP-led government would continue working with commitment and dedication for the development, security, and prosperity of the state.

On the same day Shri Sarma submitted the proposal for government formation to the Hon’ble Governor Shri Lakshman Prasad Acharya at Raj Bhavan.

Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma

• Dr. Himanta Biswa Sarma was born on February 1, 1969, in Jorhat, Assam, to writer Shri Kailash Nath Sarma and literary activist Smt. Mrinalini Devi.
• He earned his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in Political Science from Cotton College and Guwahati University, respectively.
• He also holds an LL.B. and a Ph.D. in Political Science from Guwahati University.
• During his time at Cotton College, he was highly active in the student politics and was elected General Secretary of the college’s student union for three consecutive terms.
• He practiced law at the Guwahati High Court between 1996 and 2001 before entering mainstream electoral politics.
• Shri Sarma began his political career as an MLA in 2001 from Jalukbari. He held pivotal cabinet portfolios—including Health, Education, and Finance—over 14 years and played a crucial role in reforming the state’s education and public health infrastructure.
• He was sworn in as the 15th Chief Minister of Assam in May 2021. His administration focused on extensive infrastructure development, job creation, and modernizing healthcare facilities.
• Following a decisive victory in the 2026 assembly elections, Shri Sarma was sworn in for a second consecutive term as Chief Minister on 12 May 2026.
