Development process to be in harmony with preservation of nature: Vice Prez Naidu
Vice President Shri Venkaiah Naidu has said, preservation of nature and culture is the only way to ensure a sustainable future. He was participating in the International Day of Biodiversity celebrations organized by the National Biodiversity Authority in Chennai .
Shri Naidu observed that inclusive growth contributes immensely to preservation of nature. He urged for the development process to be in harmony with preservation of nature.
The Vice President noted that nature plays a critical role in providing food, energy, medicines and genetic resources. He took pride in the fact that India has a long tradition of frugality and simple living. However, he noted that symbiotic relationship of man with nature gets debilitated as societies develop.
The Vice President said deforestation, urbanization, industrialization, and pollution lead to loss of trees at an unbelievable pace.
He said the forest cover in India stands at 21% against global standard of 33.3%. He underscored that the average abundance of native species in most land-based habitats has fallen by at least 20%, mostly since 1900.
He added, more than 40% of amphibian species, almost 33% of reef-forming corals and more than a third of all marine mammals are threatened. Shri Naidu asked for diversification of food crops and to ensure nutrition security.
Supreme Court rejects petition on verifying all votes with VVPAT
The Supreme Court dismissed a public interest litigation (PIL) seeking 100 per cent matching of voter verifiable paper audit trail (VVPAT) slips with electronic voting machines (EVMs) during the counting of general election votes on May 23.
A vacation bench of justices Arun Mishra and MR Shah refused to entertain the PIL on the ground that a larger bench, headed by Chief Justice of India (CJI) Ranjan Gogoi, had already dealt with the matter. The PIL was filed by a Chennai-based organisation, Tech 4 All.
“The CJI has dealt with this matter. Why are you taking [a] chance before a two-judge vacation bench? We will not list any such case for urgent hearing. We cannot override the CJI’s order… This is nonsense,” justice Mishra said, refusing an urgent hearing on the matter. Before dismissing the PIL, the bench observed: “We would not entertain such a plea over and over again… can’t come in the way of people electing their representatives. Let the country elect its government.”
On May 7, the CJI’s bench had dismissed a review plea filed by 21 opposition leaders, led by Andhra Pradesh chief minister N Chandrababu Naidu, to increase the random matching of VVPAT slips with EVMs to 50%.
ISRO launches spy satellite RISAT-2B
Indian space research agency (ISRO) today successfully launched an earth observation spy satellite RISAT-2B that can take high resolution images of the earth during day and night, and also under cloudy conditions to keep an eye also on terror camps across the border.
The all-weather ‘spy’ satellite, RISAT-2B (Radar Imaging Satellite-2B) will replace its predecessor RISAT-2 which has been actively used by India to monitor activities in terror camps across the border in Pakistan to thwart infiltration bids by terrorists. RISAT was launched in 2009.
This would enhance the country’s surveillance capabilities many times. The satellite is equipped with a synthetic aperture radar that can take pictures in any condition.
The spy satellite has a life span of five years. The introduction of a new RISAT series satellite will enhance India’s defence capabilities to monitor the cross border activities.
Apart from defence purposes, the Radar Imaging Satellite would also be used for surveillance, agriculture, forestry and disaster management support.
Currently, India use RISAT-2 satellite to monitor activities in camps across the border in Pakistan to thwart infiltration bids by terrorists. India also has high-resolution optical imaging CartoSAT satellites, but it gets blinded by dense cloud cover.
RISAT-2B uses X-band synthetic aperture radar that gives addition details such as size of objects on Earth, structures, movement and change.
ISRO plans to launch almost half a dozen all-weather radar imaging Risat satellites in the next one year.
